The competition is getting fierce and the action is hard core as the
Mad Rollin' Dolls near the end of their second season. Everything speeds
up towards the end, and flat-track roller derby is no exception -
the Dolls began the rigorous season-end schedule of 3 bouts in 6 weeks
on Saturday, May 6. The Unholy Rollers faced off against the Quad Squad and the Vaudeville
Vixens battled the Reservoir Dolls on the newly recoated rink at Fast
Forward Skate Center; skaters hit the floor hard and often as they adjusted
to the new surface.
 pic by Flash | In the first jam of the night, Wildberry Punch matched Jenny
Knoxville point-for-point, setting the fans up for a neck-and-neck
Unholy Rollers vs. Quad Squad match-up. But the next 2 jams saw
the Quad Squad put up 8 points to the Unholies' 0, and they
never looked back. Quad Squad defense barreled through the pack,
blocking the Unholy jammers while holding the lane for their own
jammers to slip through the inside. Quad Squad managed to steal
lead jam in all but 2 jams in the first half, giving them a 10-point
lead going into the locker room. |
| Vixens Captain Dolly Pardon Me says her team
may be low in numbers but they're full of heart, and that
was obvious when they took on the Reservoir Dolls on May 6th.
The Vixens got off to a solid start, keeping the game within one
point for most of the first half. The Reservoir Dolls pulled it
together, and Crackerjack and Tatum Tantrum turned on the speed
for the last 2 jams, each scoring 11 points to close the half
with a 12-point advantage. The Mad Drag Kings lightened things up at halftime with a show
that had people waving dollar bills for more. | pic by Papa-Razzi |
 pic by Flash | The Unholies rallied in the second half, but with every point
they put up, it seemed the Quad Squad put up one more. In a last-ditch
effort to save the game, the Unholies went to their all-star lineup
and closed the gap to only 6 points with 4 minutes left in the
game. But the Quad Squad could already taste the victory, and
raced the pack to run down the clock. Seeing they couldn't
win, Jewels of DeNile hit the floor with Jenny Knoxville in a
nasty fight that left no doubt these girls were playing for real. Final score: Quad Squad 52, Unholy Rollers 47 |
| When the Vixens hit the track for the second
half, the crowd got their hopes up again as Dolly skated a 12-point
jam. But, with only 8 players on the roster, the short-handed
Vixens just couldn't maintain the pace. Captain Dolly skated
17 out of 21 jams and still found the speed and heart to score
31 points - second only to Res Doll Tatum Tantrum who had
a spectacular night with 34 points in only 6 jams. Despite the
best efforts of the Vixens defense, the Reservoir Dolls pulled
away. Solid blocking by Scabs, Crackerjack, and the rest of the
pack helped Mouse take away a 9-point jam and lead the team into
the championship game. Final score: Reservoir Dolls 83, Vaudeville Vixens 61 | pic by Papa-Razzi |

SPECIAL THANKS TO
Cappy; PBR; security and track guys and everyone behind the scenes;
Josh and Mary Meier; Hell Hound; Texas Rollergirls; Rickster the trackster;
Ralph at Lakeside; King Thong, Sr.; David Coppafeel; all the derby widowers;
our moms; and Madison - we love you! PROCEEDS A portion of this bout's proceeds will be donated to the Schenk family.
The Schenks have weathered a series of tragedies, beginning almost one
year ago when an electrical fire left their 200-year-old farm house
uninhabitable. With no insurance, the family was reduced to living in
2 campers on the property - with no running water and electricity only
from extension cords. As if that wasn't enough, only 10 months later,
their 21-year-old son Paul was killed in a car crash. MRD felt that
this was a good opportunity to bypass the usual charitable organizations
and give directly to the people who need it most.
