Flat-track derby mania hit Madison,
WI, like a freight train Sunday night, as the Mad Rollin'
Dolls cut furious circles in the rink at Fast Forward Skate
Center. The Dolls left their nerves in the locker rooms and
brought their A game to the track. They don't play like
that in practice, it must have been the enthusiastic, sold-out
audience that inspired them to hit their hardest, and play
their dirtiest! The Dolls had been getting restless for a
while; their teams were too large, there were too many teamless
Baby Dolls, and everyone wanted to play, but no one expected
it to erupt the way it did! |
| In a narrow victory, the Quad
Squad took the first period 36-34, but the High Rollers made
them earn it; it was the most skilled and civilized period
of the night. During the halftime show by Knuckel Drager,
the leadership of the Quad Squad broke down, when co-captain
Mouse confronted captain Yngrid Murdersteen. Mouse is a great
jammer, but Yngrid didn't play her. Instead, Mouse spent
the period lining up other Dolls to play, and fetching water
and towels for Yngrid. The High Rollers' captain, Big
Diesel, was nearby and drawn in to the argument, which turned
into a shoving match. All the other dolls came rolling when
they saw their captains fighting, and hair and punches flew
as they all joined in the melee. In the end, Mouse created
her own team, made up of eager Baby Dolls, dissatisfied Rollers
and Quads, and loyal friends. Diesel and Yngrid spent the
rest of the halftime in the locker rooms, bitching and whining
and making up new rosters, while the confused crowd murmured
and Knuckel Drager rocked on. |

The bout was restructured so
that the girls on the breakoff team, who called themselves
the Renegades, played two periods, one against the High Rollers
and one against the Quad Squad. The Renegades played vicious
and dirty, taking out months of pent-up frustration on the
original teams, and winning both periods, 45-41 against the
High Rollers and 60-42 against the Quads. Both periods were
riddled with fights, particularly the last period, as Mouse
and Yngrid faced off in the ultimate grudge match. The athleticism
was outstanding, and many stars emerged during the bout. Jewells
of Denile, Pocahotass and Yngrid were the lead scorers, but
Hell Kat, Mouse and Yankee Rose skated harder than anyone
knew they could. Predator, Pam Demonium and Ilsa were standout
blockers, they made it look easy. The only injury was early
in the game: Crackerjack aggravated a newly-torn ankle ligament,
rode the bench with the Renegades the rest of the night and
didn't look one bit happy about it. |
| Like true derby athletes, all
the dolls left their aggression on the rink, wiped off the
blood and sweat and drank together till dawn. They say they're
still smiling, it was so much fun. The Mistreaters and Bleed
played at the High Noon Saloon, which hosted the afterparty,
and the afterbar only broke up because the neighbors called
the cops. The Dolls want to thank the derby girls from Chicago
and Minneapolis who hauled their butts all that way to cheer
for us the loudest.
In the aftermath of the breakoff, the dolls have decided
to dissolve their team affiliations. They want to restructure
the teams so that nothing like that ever happens again. Now
the Dolls go back to practicing, and they will fine-tune the
derby machine so that, when their real season starts in January,
it's bigger, better and more feisty, sexy, aggressive
fun than ever. Stay tuned to this website for updates, party
dates and the real season schedule!
As always, Mad Dolls love you.
